Announcing the 2006 Bruce Bowyer Foundation Mathematics Scholarship Award

We are very pleased to announce the availability of the first Bruce Bowyer Foundation Mathematics Scholarship Award.This scholarship is being endowed in memory of the late Bruce H. Bowyer, who was an exceptionally talented mathematician, in addition to being a Master rated chess player.

The 2006 Scholarship Award will be for $1,000.00 (One Thousand Dollars) and is planned to be paid on September 30, 2006 *.
Applications may be submitted beginning May 1, 2006. Final deadline for consideration will be August 31, 2006.
* This payout date assumes that all necessary test results have been provided to the candidates in time to meet the deadline above. If test results are not provided to the candidates in time to meet the deadline date, we will take this into consideration on a case by case basis, and award the scholarship as soon as possible after September 30, 2006.

This marks the beginning of what we hope will be an increasing annual award amount to one unusually gifted student per year, who intends to major in Mathematics at the college undergraduate level, and who meets the eligibility criteria.

These criteria are very specific, and all are levels of achievement that were met or surpassed by Bruce Bowyer in his lifetime. We are looking for students whose interests are similar to what Bruce’s were, in the hope that we can inspire the kind of people we admire, to achieve their life’s goals.

The eligibility criteria are as follows, and all criteria must be met:

1) Open to New York City High School Seniors only ( both public and private schools)
Student must be a high school senior during the 2005-2006 school year.
2) Must have achieved a minimum combined SAT score of 1500 on the math and verbal sections only. The new essay section of the SAT will not be considered for this award.
3) A minimum composite score of 5 on the AP-Calculus AB exam
4) A minimum US Chess Federation rating of 1800
5) Student must intend to major in Mathematics

In addition, we’d like to get a small sense of the person besides their math & chess skills--
so if you’d like, please tell us one thing you think is funny.

Typically, scholarship $ gets paid to the school, not the individual, but this first time, the award will be paid directly to the individual.

No written essay is required, and no consideration will be given to minority, ethnic, religious, political, socio-economic or other factors. All we’re interested in is your brain, please do not clutter up your application with the preceding irrelevant information.

The award recipient will be chosen based on the highest ranked values in each of the above criteria. In the case of more than one student having identical highest scores, the award will be based on earliest submission of all required docs, within the specified date range and before the deadline date, based on the postal mark. Weighted rankings of the criteria will be determined by us, and the award will be made at the sole discretion of the Bruce Bowyer Foundation. Decision of the Foundation Director is final.

We do not require machine-printed or typewritten applications, but if we can’t read your handwriting, you’re out of luck, so print carefully if you fill it out manually.

Applicants may apply in one of 2 ways, and must also submit official test results in hardcopy by postal mail as below.

NOTE: Official transcript confirmations of SAT and AP Calc test scores must be submitted in hard copy to the Postal address in (2) above, regardless of how the original application is submitted.
