The 8th Annual Bruce Bowyer Memorial Chess Tournaments
Were held at the Hotel New Yorker
8th Avenue and 34 Street, New York
on April 28 & 29th, 2007

Sponsored by our dear friends at the Royce Funds,
a wonderful time was had by all, both players and kibitzers.
Results and related information below provided by The Bruce Bowyer
Foundation
.

We had a great turnout this year, and are looking forward to keeping this party going for years to come!

This annual event in Bruce's honor continues to grow and is now a traditional
favorite in the NY chess world. We did another survey again this year
to get some feedback from our players on what they did and didn’t like
about our tournament, and how we might improve it.

Take a look at some of the replies, they are both interesting and funny:
*most of the kids favorite part of the tournament is still the fun spirit and the free food

The adults enjoy coffee, the low $ fee and the strong competition, but the consensus overall is that a hug from Sunny makes this truly the friendliest chess event of the year.  Young gunslingers everywhere were thrilled to see our ‘resident’ GM, the great Joel Benjamin playing as he has done every year – we love you , Joel!  And this year Joel was joined by another GM, a longtime friend of Bruce’s, Michael Rohde.  Along with the great IM’s who also come out for us, there is formidable and legendary game to be had with us.  Bruce would be very proud, you guys… although I don’t know if he’d be so eager to play in this, though- LOL!

Although no one qualified for all the criteria for the 2007 scholarship, the Bruce Bower Foundation awarded a special , one-time scholarship prize to Leif Pressman, in the amount of $500.00, as the candidate closest to meeting the criteria.

Saturday evening, we held the traditional "Bughouse" tournament.
Bughouse is a fast-moving variant
of chess, played by teams of two, that was a favorite and specialty of
Bruce's. Bughouse results were both fast and funny, but were lost in a computer glitch.

Congratulations to the winners & thanks to all our family of players
for joining us.  We look forward to seeing you all next year!

thanks to Nick Conticello and Ron Young, our Tournament Directors .
Logistical/administrative/emotional support (&catering) were provided
by Bruce's sister Pat and his niece, Sunny, along with family members
Rebecca and Ariel Gendelman.

This event would not have been possible without the continued help and
support from Chuck Royce and so many of Bruce’ s colleagues at the
Royce Funds as well as friends everywhere.

We would like to especially thank:
John & Crystal Burke, David Wilson, Dan O’Byrne and family, Peter
Kopke, Mark Penkower, Joe Le Du, Guy Doherty, and especially Mr. John Galvin
and Elizabeth of I.S. 318.

The tournament was a tremendous success, and we so are proud to have
once again hosted an event that celebrated Bruce Bowyer's memory by honoring his
beliefs.
