The 3rd Annual Bruce Bowyer Memorial Chess Tournaments

• Were held at the Marshall Chess Club
23 West 10th Street, New York, NY 10011
(212) 477-3716

on March 16 & 17, 2002

Sponsored by Royce & Associates, the turnout was our highest to date, with over 60 players in the Open. Results and related information below provided by Royce & the Marshall.

Once again, a fine time was had by all, and this annual event in Bruce's honor continues to grow.

• Saturday's open tournament ended in a First place 4-0 score for
Two-time U.S. champion and Grand Master Joel Benjamin ($150)

Second place was a 5-way tie, the winners were: Jay Bonin, Asa Hoffman, Yevgeny Gershov,
Boris Feldman, and Vladimir Grechikhin ($30)

Alex Lenderman had the best score with a rating under 2200,

Pelekhaty and Kiev tied for the Under 2000 prize, and

Ralph Monda was the best under 1800.

• That evening, we held a"Bughouse" tournament. Bughouse is a fast-moving variant of chess,
played by teams of two, that was a favorite and specialty of Bruce's.

After the initial round-robin ended in a tie, three playoff rounds were required
to decide a clear, upset winner: Brennan Ward and Dan Ryan

The action was so exciting, people were crowded around the boards and standing on chairs to watch this fascinating game-- even the non-chess players were cheering!

• In Sunday's junior tournament, there was a tie for First Prize, winners were
Gary Mardakhaev and Brian Wilmeth ($150 plus trophy)

Second was also tied, 3-way, with Marcus Mairena, Greg Fernandez and Sunil Matabeek
sharing the glory and a cash prize

Under 1800 winner was Brennan Ward ($25 + trophy)
Under 1600 winner was Clever Gallegos (same prize)
Under 1400 winner was Jillian Alvarez (same prize)
and under 1200 was tied between Erick Cruz, Evan Rubin, and Karreim Muhammed

Many thanks to the Marshall Chess Club and its staff, and special thanks to
Nick Conticello of the Manhattan Chess Club, and Fritz Gaspard of Chess In The Schools.
Logistical/emotional support (&catering) were provided by Bruce's sister Pat, and the rest of his family.

The event would not have been possible without help from Chuck Royce
and the following Royce employees:
John Burke, our Tournament Coordinator, David Wilson, Mark Penkower,Dan O'Byrne,
and Bruce's other colleagues at Royce.

The tournament was a tremendous success, and we are proud to have
hosted an event that celebrated Bruce Bowyer's memory by honoring his beliefs.
